Very, very sad and shortsighted IMHO, but that is to be expected from the fat suits at FIFA I guess :-(

Well I tried voting for "Good Idea" but it wouldn't let me...

I think there needs to be some sort of goalline technology introduced, but I don't think it should be super invasive. My ideal situation would be goal line cameras that feed directly to the 4th official who, if there is any doubt, can look at them quickly, and give the referee the answer. That way you get the best of both both worlds; you make sure you have the correct decision (or at least have the opportunity to) but you also keep the game moving, which is a big concern.

Look at this weekend's FA Cup match between Portsmouth and the Brummies. Mere minutes after FIFA had decided in their super, top-secret, members-only, meeting that goal line technology would not be used, Birmingham City had a legitimate goal not given. Had there been a way for the officials to review the footage, they would have seen that they had gotten the call wrong and most likely awarded the goal. All of a sudden, it's an entirely different match, 2-1 with 15 minutes or so to play.

I would *LOVE* to hear from somebody who thinks this is a bad idea (and we are just talking about goal line, ball in or out, instant notification in the ear of the official, so don't try and hijack the thread by introducing ambiguous options! Oh, and you are not allowed to use the "it's the thin edge of the wedge, beginning of the end" argument either as that is just silly, because if you use that then the game would still be where it was in 1900!)

It's v.simple. Beep in the ear of all four officials indicates ball over goal line.

Next?

I agree with FIFA...you know how I feel about this GL Technology....would taint the game and put an astrict next to just about every great match ever played. Our game is made up of good, bad, right, rong, missed calls- this would hurt more than it would help....

Keepin' it real......

How/why, to both your statements?

This has been argued enough but I still don't understand why you would say no to this. It would NOT hurt the game, there are a few great ways to introduce it and it wouldn't slow down play if done right.

That's my point, I hear the usual "It would ruin the game, it's not right" etc. but I have *never* heard anybody put an articulate argument up for not doing it. I would love to discuss it with some of the "no's" but none of them want to (I think because they don't really have a good argument other than "it'll ruin the game" but without backing those sort of statements up with meat.

Yes Axon and Wrayman, that is a challenge to you both ;-)

One of the things Blatter said was that it would be very expensive, and that they wouldn't be able to use it globally in every single FIFA sanctioned league. I see where he is coming from but that is a load of s**t because football, basketball, and hockey (and now baseball) all have some sort of replay technology in the higher leagues, but not across the board, covering every league, and no one is complaining about high school coaches not being able to challenge a call. What a cop-out

Well...Lets see here-
Being a competitive player all my life, assisting as a U-17 coach, never refed, but know most of the rules and I do see BOTH sides of this issue, but for where my heart lies is with the complete and 100% retainment of the same game that has been played for years upon years- Yes, there has been the introduction of yellow/red cards, substitution limits, and keeper handling restrictions- but never anything that has been done on any “Line Technology”- whether its goal-line, end-line, or touch-line technology. I honestly feel that it comes down to Purists/old-shcool v. Techies/reformers.

I don't know if a 100% Clinical answer exists- but soccer/football is anything but Clinical- every game starts the same- but is usually different-

In the point of Goal Line Technology® 1.01...joke about technology (figured you'd get that one AndyB). I think that that is the beauty of this game, the Subjectivity- you sometimes win & sometimes lose by a call from the ref on the pitch, being somewhat old-school- I do appreciate and sometimes praise & loathe the “3 blind mice”, but overall could you count on the ref in the middle + the 2 Linespeople + 4th official to hear the call from the “eye in the sky” or “beeper/pager” and get it right..They screw up the easy stuff....Did you hear that...??? No-Did you...??? Could have swore I heard that beep...? Would it be better than an out of position Linesman from 30yds away..? Maybe yes...Maybe No..their decision is STILL final.

I'm sure 100 years ago- adding an official, then linesmen would have been against the origination of the game & that Flags we considered “New Technology” at one point in time, but to POTENTIALLY stop the game on every goal-line skirmish or may-lay in the box might end in the ref's whistle to stop and confirm- and if so when would the play be called..5 seconds later...after 15- but not more than 33 seconds, but up to a full minute after the ball crossed the line. This would be something that might become an issue as well- would a manager then throw a flag to request a questionable call...??

You can go back in history where goal-line technology would have overturned or confirmed goals that would have shot teams & players into different circumstances- with this technology I personally feel that IT WOULD NOT STOP with only Goal Line technology- once the world of football opens Pandora's Box, it would continue on & on. Touchlines....Penalty areas....ball contact on the player...offside...GPS ball tracking and soforth.-

I'm afraid the rule of thumb would more than likely state..If the technology exists- we have to use it.

Some ideas-
-Attacking sides would want it, but defending sure would like a mal-function....
-We are one sport that is still pretty close to the way it was invented-except for a couple of player safety rule changes.....
-Would take out the Human aspect of one of the “Biggest decisions of the match”...???
-Do all for Refs get the buzz so they con confirm- what if one of the linesman doesn't hear it- does majority rule..??even the Linesman at the opposite side of the pitch..??
-Go back to all plays in the last 50 years and update them or put an asterict by them- "Pre-GLT Match"...???
-How long would the allowable delay period be to make a stoppage decision....under 1 min....under 90 sec...Fergie Time...???
- Play advantage....??
-Heck, what happens if the ball is knocked in to the goal by the attacker's hand illegally and missed by the ref...?? (talk about no need for GL Technology...hahahahaha)

I really wonder where it would stop- there would be no guarantees it would only be used for GL technology...we could go on and on about this technology- but my 2 cents would be that I do like the game the way it is (missed goals or phantom calls as well) and that 8 Minute Conferencing Delay for Goal Line Technology Confirmation by 4 Man Committee within 33.76839 Seconds After any Questionable Play on the Goal Line would not be the answer for me.

Once again I do see both points, but this is the way I see it....

Wrayman
I would have liked it for Liverpool 05 as well....just for that moment...hahahahahaha
