Europe’s most storied clubs call Fox Soccer home this summer

LOS ANGELES (July 10, 2012) – FOX Soccer is home to the biggest names in European soccer this summer, as the network today announced it is airing five international friendlies in the months of July and August. These contests feature the best of the global game – including reigning UEFA Champions League victor Chelsea FC – alongside premier North American teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Primera Division. Four of the five matches are part of the 2012 Herbalife World Football Challenge, with iconic sporting venues like Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field playing host to the world’s best.

“We’re excited to showcase top clubs from both sides of the Atlantic on our network this summer, with historic European teams featuring alongside some of the best CONCACAF clubs in our region,” said Joshua Glassel, Vice President of Programming and Acquisitions for FOX Soccer.

Kicking things off is one of the sport’s most historic clubs, as five-time European champion Liverpool FC faces MLS side Toronto FC at Rogers Centre on July 21. Home to one of the most passionate fan bases in North America, Toronto will provide a colorful backdrop for newly-appointed Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and his players as they prepare for the 2012-2013 Barclays Premier League campaign.

The next day FOX Soccer is showing two international matchups, beginning with Italian giant AS Roma against Polish club Zaglebie Lubin inside the friendly confines of Chicago’s Wrigley Field. Later that day, perhaps the most anticipated game is slated to take place at iconic Yankee Stadium, as European champion Chelsea FC and Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain face off.  Marking the first soccer match in the new Yankee Stadium, and the first stop in New York by Chelsea FC since 1954, the event is sure to bring a hint of European flare to a stadium built for America’s national pastime. Adding to the drama, Paris Saint-Germain is ushering in a new era under Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, who was Chelsea’s manager during the team’s last U.S. tour in 2009.

On July 28 PSG heads down I-95 to play four-time MLS Cup winner D.C. United at another historic American sporting venue, 51-year-old RFK Stadium in the nation’s capital. That contest will be shown on delay at 10:00 PM EST on FOX Soccer.

Lastly, the network’s coverage concludes on August 5 as Spain’s Real Madrid heads to Las Vegas to take on current Mexican champion Santos Laguna. The most successful team in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history (nine titles), Real Madrid boasts some of the most prominent players in global soccer, including Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
